Between Land and Sea
The Atlantic Coast and the
Transformation of New England
Featured Speaker: Professor Christopher Pastore
Rhode Island native Christopher Pastore grew up on
Narragansett Bay. Now an Associate Professor of History at
the University of Albany, his latest book Between Land and
Sea: The Atlantic Coast and the Transformation of New England
explores the many ways European settlers reworked the
marshy coastal margin into more useful and profitable land
by draining swamps, damming rivers, and digging canals,
resulting in an altered “coastline” less resilient to natural
variation and human impact today.
